March 2008--Business is Growing!
2008 is off to a fantastic beginning as RTG Medical’s traveling staff grew to a company high. Our Senior Recruiters work hard to build and maintain relationships with their travel employees and medical facilities across the country. This is evident as more and more medical professionals choose RTG Medical as their agency of choice. ‘RTG Medical understands that you cannot fake anything in this industry.’ Explains Bill Fleck, RTG Medical--Sales Manager. ‘As a Senior Recruiter, you do everything you can to provide hospitals with the best candidate available. You also do everything you can to let your field employees know that you appreciate them and their efforts.’ Nick Janssen, RTG Medical—Sales Manager adds, ‘Our field employees understand that our relationship with them carries beyond the assignment, we believe that is very important.’
Janssen finds Fremont ideal community for RTG Medical's development
parts of the following story are taken from Nancy Line Jacobs article in Midlands Business Journal Vol. 33 No. 14, March 30, 2007
Growth at RTG Medical in Fremont has been impressive since Charlie Janssen, chairman and CEO, joined the company in 2002, but Janssen may be even more enthused by the number of employees - about half - who are willing to commute from Omaha or Lincoln to work there.
"We have 36 employees in Fremont, and even though there are companies in Omaha that provide similar services, we give our employees a reason to commute from Omaha to Fremont instead of the other way around. We pay them well and offer opportunities to succeed. It's a testament to the work we're all doing as a company," said Janssen, 36.
RTG Medical is a medical staffing agency whose objective is to help medical facilities meet temporary staffing needs with qualified medical professionals at a reasonable cost, and to find the best available candidates for specific needs.
Sworn in last December as a Fremont city councilman, Janssen hopes to see other businesses attract professionals who will find the commute worthwhile.
"The drive isn't long," Janssen said. "I left my Fremont office one day at exactly 11:30 a.m. and was sitting at a table at the Scarlet and Cream Letter Club at Village Pointe with a menu at noon."
RTG Medical was located in Omaha when Janssen became CEO. "At that time we had only a few employees and most of them lived in Fremont. The ownership group decided it was a good time to move. We then grew from four to eleven employees, and we were taking up all the parking spaces at the mini-mall complex where we were located and doubling up desks.
"Now we have a floor at the First State Bank Building o the 23rd Street corridor with room to grow."
Janssen's wife, Misty Janssen, M.D., joined a family medicine clinic in Fremont, and Janssen became a Fremont Area Medical Center Foundation board member.
"It seems like I'm on boards all over the place, but I enjoy being an ambassador to Fremont." He said "I want people to see what we have to offer. Much of our company success has been locally generated."
While Janssen has overseen rapid growth at RTG Medical, he shares credit with staff for the company making the 2005 INC. 500 list of fastest growing companies in America, increasing revenues from just over $1 million in 2002 to nearly $25 million in 2006.
"With the end of the first quarter approaching, we're still on track to double our base of health care professionals to 400 and see revenues of $35 million to $40 million in 2007," he said. "Our biggest hurdle is finding additions to our staff that fit the specific needs of our clients nationwide. We're not a one-size-fits-all company, and we strive to achieve the right matches between recruiters and clients."
"Our mantra is to develop relationships, not just complete transactions. If there are any personality differences between a client and a recruiter, we try hard to take steps to correct it as soon as we can."
Janssen was born in Fremont and grew up in nearby Nickerson. He earned a bachelors degree at Wayne State College and is a Persian Gulf War veteran who served as a United States Navy Search and Rescue Swimmer from 1989 to 1993.
"Last month marked the fourth anniversary of my wife and me moving back to Fremont," Janssen said. "The community has helped RTG grow as a company, and helped me grow as an individual."
Janssen's family also has grown to include a son, Charlie Jr., 3, and a daughter Betsey Anne, born Nov. 27. He is past president of Fremont Veterans Club and memberships include VFW Post 854, American Legion
Post 20, past president of the Fremont Veterans Club, Fremont Honor Guard Unit, Fremont Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Tangier
Shriners. His board affiliations include the Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District, Northeast Nebraska Housing Board,
Fremont Area United Way, Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce, Advisory Board member of the Fremont National Bank, Fremont Area Medical
Center Foundation, Greater Fremont Development Council director, government affairs committee.
"It's easy to become involved and develop mentor relationships in a town like Fremont," Janssen said. "There are always people to help you."
Future growth is a continuing priority for RTG Medical, Janssen said. "We don't do any international work, but we have had placements in all 50 states," he said. "Our plan is to keep gaining a stronger foothold in markets in all of them."
Timely Information for Tax Season
In late February, just in time for tax season, Joseph Smith EA from TravelTax spoke at RTG Medical on several tax issues related to the traveling employee industry. Joseph spoke about important common issues such as how to receive untaxed wages such as per diem, car allowances and housing allowances. He also spoke about things a traveler could do to ensure they had accurate documentation when it was tax time to prove they were eligible to receive untaxed per diems. And lastly, he spoke of the disadvantages of programs such as the “Tax Advantage” program. There are some companies that promote pushing a traveler’s taxable wages as low as possible and raising per diem amounts as high as possible to save them money. Mr. Smith pointed out that a program such as this could hurt the traveler if, for instance, they didn’t qualify to receive such tax-free benefits in the first place. Another example was if the traveler needed to get a loan. Their taxed income amount would not nearly reflect the actual amount earned and could hurt their chances of getting the loan.
While we cannot make tax decisions for you, your RTGMedical representative is better prepared to guide you to tax answers with this timely and outstanding information. We believe the money left in your pocket through wise council will be appreciated and add to our value.

Janssen honored by Midlands Business Journal
The Midland’s Business Journal 40 under 40 listing recently selected RTG Medical Chairman and CEO, Charlie Janssen as an honoree.
The award honors the accomplishment of 40 greater Omaha and Council Bluffs entrepreneurs, business executives and professional men and women under 40 years of age. All 40 honorees will be recognized at a December 1st awards breakfast in Omaha.
Janssen, 35, has overseen tremendous growth at the six-year old medical staffing firm. Under his leadership RTG Medical was named to the prestigious INC 500 list of fastest growing companies in America, and has increased revenues from just over one million dollars in 2002 to nearly 25 million in 2006.
“This is obviously a great honor, but our growth is primarily a result of our dedicated staff. I was reluctant about this award when one of my employees asked to nominate me. I certainly did not want to send a message that I have been responsible for all of the great accomplishments of our employees and my partners. This award may have my name on it but in reality it should say RTG Medical,” said Janssen.
Janssen got the news of his selection on a day where there was already cause for celebration. RTG Medical was hosting a business after hours to celebrate their anniversary and Charlie was also elected to Fremont City Council later in the evening. “What a day, I think I used up a lot of positives for a 24 hour period. I actually did not tell anybody on that day about the award other than the employee that nominated me.”
Janssen and his wife Misty, a Fremont Physician, are expecting even better news at the end of the month when the couple is expecting the arrival of their second child who will be welcomed home by his three year old brother Charlie Jr.
